Could anybody suggest a good source for porthole seals. I posted a similar request on the uk rec sailing group about this time last year, and there are various rubber extrusion manufacturers who list posthole seals. I bought a couple of metres from one of what appeared to be correct size, but the seal was too large for the rebate, square shaped whereas the groove it needs to be placed in is slightly taped, and the rubber was too hard. Is rubber the correct material?

Any thoughts welcome

Resealed mine with round rubber from Seals+Direct last year. Bought a few metres, and then just cut to length and join with a drop of super glue. Have sealed perfectly since. Take a bit of time to bed in, then rubber conforms to irregularities in the frame shape.

There are three main types of porthole seals. A soft solid natural rubber (similiar in hardness to a pencil eraser). This type of seal is designed for brass/bronze portholes-it is not suitalbe for plastic or lightweight aluminium ones. See Porthole Rubber Strip

The second type of seal is usually made from expanded neoprene or EPDM and comes in different formats (round, square, rectangular etc). See Sponge seals

The third type is an extruded rubber and normally has a hollow bulb on it to allow for compression. See Extruded seals

Hope That this helps
