The sound of heavy teeth gnashing is to be heard! So as to be a good boy with the licenceing office I applied on 8th October for a transportable licence for my handheld VHF. This was done via the internet and I received a nice little reply via email saying thank you etc and your licence will be issued in 14 working days! As of today, no such event has occured so a quick phone call to disccover what's happened.

A nice lady with a Brisle accent says,, let me check sir! A few minutes later she returns to say, yes sir we have the application its just not been processsed! We'll get onto it right away. So much for on line applications!!!! [frown}

I have just purchased a fixed VHF and also a handheld backup which I will be using in Majorca. I do not have an operators licence yet (doing the course in January) and they are both still in their boxes not in use.

I am not sure what ships licences I need, as the boat is British registered I think I need a UK Fixed ships licence which I believe also covers the handheld as long as it is only used on my boat (or tender/lifeboat).

Am I right?

Yes, fixed licence will cover all vhf on board, including handheld - though as you say, only for use on your vessel

As already stated a "main"- £20 - licence will cover both a fixed and a handheld. Handheld can only be used in conjunction with the boat to which main call sign is given. And from tender again as stated. As an RYA Powerboat Instructor, I always have a portable VHF as part of my travelling kit. It is therefore a requirement to have a licence for the set itself.

/forums/images/icons/wink.gif I suppose you got yours becuase you rang them from the bath, and like me were to scared of the consequences/forums/images/icons/smile.gif Out of interest, why did you want a seperate licence? So you could use it while playing with your battleship in the bath???!!!
