Porta Poti or Holding tank?

A PortaPotti is only viable as a temporary alternative, for example if you occasionally go into waters where you are not allowed to discharge. There are problems of stowage, chemicals, capacity and disposal which really rule them out for sustained use...

Sorry don't agree, though it might be easier to use a holding tank than a PP in some places, depends what you're doing, where you're going, what model of reality you have as to whether a PP is viable in the long term. Annie Hill used one happily for many years...

Not a very good example. She never goes anywhere near "civilisation" where there are rules. Even with the current regulations you would find it very difficult to cruise in Turkish waters for exampole without a holding tank for sewage, and if the legislation goes ahead for grey water as well in some parts.

I said that if you are going serious cruising in the Med it would not be a good idea to rely on a Porti Potti! Is that what you don't agree with?

A Porta Potti - or even a "bucket and chuck it" is OK if you are at sea most of the time, but if your "cruising" is going to include periods at anchor or moored up to quays in the lovely Med coastline then I would say a holding tank is essential.
