Port Solent Lock - Sunday

We were number 62 in the Port Solent "lock-in" queue yesterday - Nightmare!!

Any advance on 62...?

I heard it (on radio) go higher than that at sister marina Chichester, on Friday. My only solice for not be being able to sail, was not having to do that either. I guess that it is a price we pay for the comfort enjoyed the rest of the time. People were getting very stressed, it's a shame that the start or end of "longed for" weekends is spoiled by that. Oh well we pays our money etc!

I was 58 and must have squeezed ahead in the PS lock just before you. After making good time from Weymouth, it was a bit of a pain waiting so long. Not sure why all the sunsalery boats were not out on the pontoons in time for the weekend rather than packing in them back in.

Too true.

Frustrating thing is that at least half the queue was Sunsail boats. Surely they can raft up on the waiting pontoons to offload crew & move them inside the marina at their leisure after the Bank Holiday...

I thought that Sunsail largely re-located outside the marina last year? Maybe it's early yet.

That means you were just in front of Sunsail 70, who kept reversing(!!) through the queue behind her.

I had a long chat with a lock master at PS 2 weeks ago. He said the SunSail boats would be relocated outside again this year.

Another point for the non PS residents reading this, queue number 62 doesn’t mean the queue is 62 boats long at the point of issue. The number increases sequentially per day/tide?

It might be tidal, but maybe my Mill Rythe mooring isn't quite as inaccessible as I'd thought it was - at least I don't have to queue!

True re Mill Rythe (I'm in HYC), but in Port Solent your boat doesn't get sprayed with muddy salt with a windy LW. Took ages to get it off and repolish over Easter:-(

Fair point. As #62 I had to wait for 3 "lock-cycles", therefore I was approximately 20th in the actual queue.

The guy who decided which boat goes where in the lock is now officially known as the Lock Packer!!

Don't know if we're forced to, but we do out of courtesy of course.

I think the Sunsail boats are not rafted on the waiting pontoon yet because the dredger is still present and I guess its not finished yet. I was lock in number 37 and the kids were doing my head in ....

Strange - had no trouble getting back onto the club pontoon at Burnham on Sea - and the Bristol channel was blissfully free of air chatter too.
Location - location - location !
I shall now go and hide in a bunker for 3 days. !

Blimey, these cutting remarks are out of character Nigel !!

Don't know about Port Solent, but at Hythe there is a huge red sign that insists that engines (and radar) are turned off. We never bother and nor do 90% of the other users, from my experience, and the lock masters don't say owt about it.

I do, I think everyone should, whether they be sail or motor! Out of deference to the lock keepers. It's not a very pleasant place to be, with several diesel engines pumping out noxious (sp) fumes.

Timing is all

I had no trouble getting through Port Solent lock on Sunday by leaving the Folly after breakfast and locking in without waiting at 1130. There was an hour's freeflow after that too. We are quite used to planning for tidal gates, so I suggest that planning for lock gates is also part of the game if you use locked marinas.
