I am planning to haul out this winter and was looking at Port Solent boatyard with Google Maps to figure out where the hoist was (found it) but I noticed that the boatyard doesn't seem to have a fence ! Is it just invisible due to being a straight down view ? Does anyone have any experience ( anecdotal or first hand ) of the security at Port Solent ? I was hoping not to have to take absolutely everything off the boat to keep it away from theiving scroats.

I have been out at Port Solent for the last couple of winters and you are quite correct in that there is no physical security and I believe that in the past there has been some issues with boats being broken into. However I have never had a problem and they do have security people that walk around - this may be a result of the past breakin's.

When not on the boat I always make sure that my ladder is locked in a position under the boat so it can't be moved or used.

On the whole it is a good yard but the Elecrticity is VERY expensive if you are on one of the card meters.

Hop this helps

There is CCTV covering the whole site. Don't know about security patrols. I didn't have any problem last winter, tho if I was looking for a boat to break into, mine wouldnt be the first choice!
However, I found the on-site chandlery to be extremely useful as its well stocked and nice and warm on winter's afternoons.

The worst thing I heard was in the spring when the locals marched in with black spray paint and "decorated" about 10 boats. It wasn't so much of a problem for the newer boats but owners of older ones with more porous gel coat really struggled to get it off.
I had just launched so missed it.
Other than that, it seems Ok and I will be out there for the third year.

Cheers

Well, it may be "complete round objects" but according to the guy I was talking to in the upholstery firm in P. Solent it did happen. He was stuck serving in the shop waiting for his colleagues to come back from the affected boats.
Why he would make it up, I don't know. There was certainly a lot of running around going on.
I was just happy at having been launched the day before.

Cheers

I took my catamaran there about 3 years ago. Someone stole my aerogen and tried to steal the outboard controls. Total cost of repairs about £3K. After this, a week before launch, one hull was "decorated" with paint. Attempts to identify culprits by CCTV a complete waste of time. The security guard does a single trip round once a night, and had seen nothing. I think their security is effectively non existent.
