PORT NAPOLEON EAST TO ITALY

We will be cruising the French coast to the east of Port Napoleon towards Italy this spring and the various pilots have a huge selection of marinas,harbours and anchorages.If anyone has particular recommendations or favourites it would be most appreciated.

use anchorages if you can, in the riviera: in the gulf of st trop, cannes villefranche, and outside menton for example.

Marseilles, Cassis, st tropez, port grimaud, ste-maxime, cannes, Nice (too full at weekends), Menton all recommended as "don't miss". St Jean cap ferrat is a bit of a dump, imho, and mentally expensive - anchor outside if you must. Do this very late to avoid mega wash of boats returning. After 7:30, you can nip in to marinas and stay free as long as you are gone before 7:30 am.

We cruised French coast last year ending up near Rome. I'd second TCM's comments and also add my thanks to MedMan for the info he provided - from Cadiz to Rome it provided helpful ideas.

We enjoyed anchoring off Callanques/Cassis, St Trop, Villefranche and Menton especially.

Once you get to Italy we felt the coast to Genoa was well worth skipping if we ever returned to the area - overcrowded beaches and overpriced marinas. Beyond that we enjoyed the Portofino area (much easier to get into and cheaper than expected),La Spezia bay and Elba.

We travelled as family with 2 kids age 7/9.

we did this last spring. The french coast is attractive and I particular liked the Porqueroles (spelt wrong). I agree that the Italian coast isn't fantastic along the north of the golfe of Genoa. We found cheap and pleasant stopping places at Bordegera and Imperia, the Arno river is weird/interesting but quite hard to find a berth. We really liked the anchorage at Porto Barratti, the people there are great, theres a bus to Piombino and there are secure moorings if you need them. Capraia is well worth a visit as is Elba. Thats as far as we got as we then went to Sardinia.
