Port Joinville- Ile de Yeu

Sauzon on Belle Isle much nicer........Port Joinville is a little bit like a "Wild West" town. It was packed solid when we were there in May 2003.

Belle Isle and Isle de Yeu are probably about 50nm apart, so don't why other poster suggested that.

I think it is worth a visit and we stopped there on the way down to La Rochelle and back again. The island is very flat and perfect for cycling around (in actual fact tourist cars are not allowed). There are also some lovely beaches. The closest other all tide marinas to Isle de Yeu are Pornic to the north and Les Sables d'Olonne to the south.

Let me know if you want know more.

Much appreciated. We are on our way north back to the East Coast from North Spain. Thought we would try Joinville for Saturday after a day sail from La Rochelle but didnt want to get there in evening to be turned away because of over crowding. Looks an OK place from the pilot books. Belle Isle on the Sunday ought to be quieter. Ta V much.

Depending on the wind direction of course but there is a nice anchorage on the SE corner of Isle De Yeu called Anse De Vielles, much nicer than Port Joinville and free! From memory because I haven't done it, it is also possible to anchor off the Joinville side, if the harbour was too full, but I can't see it would be in May except on a weekend.

Belle Isle (Le Palais or Sauzon) will be busy on Saturday nights for sure, less so on Sunday as weekenders head home. If conditions allow (no swell) the anchorages on the ocean side of Belle Isle are delightful, but not near shore facilities, it is also possible to anchor outside of Le Palais (lots of ferry wash) or 2 bays east at Port Y'Orc'h (sp?).

Alternative to Belle Isle would be the small harbour or anchorages on Isle D'Houat, there are good if small mini markets on the Island which is one of the prettiest spots ever IMO.

After Belle Isle depends what you want but personally we go straight to Benodet/Concarneau/Glenans because IMO Isle De Groix isn't worth stopping at and I'm not a fan of Lorient either, personal opinion only of course.
