Does anyone know if this bay, just south of Ramsey, offers a reasonable anchorage? Exposed to the east and north, natch, but "port" in the name offers me hope. I'm running an event near there next summer and it would be nice to sail there if the opportunity arises ...

I'd also be interested to know if anyone has been into Port Groudle, at the mouth of Groudle Glen. From the shore it looks snug but do-able.

Been to the IOM many times including Ramsey, I've never actually been there or seen anyone but it will be very rocky. I imagine it could be used as an anchorage but it's within the 2m depth contour. Anywhere "could be" an anchorage after that I guess, it's then a question of wind strength and direction, how long for and what a skipper and crew want to put up with. There are visitor moorings outside Ramsey.

Luckily I only draw 1.4m, so - for short stays anyway - I am quite used to anchoring in places where the chart says 2m or less.

It'll be a bit tidal I would think as well as being exposed to Northerlies - why not park in Ramsey for the duration of your stay?

I'm only thinking of Port e Vullen as somewhere to use if the weather favours it. In any sort of an easterly I'll be in Peel. With luck I'll have a week to explore while the event is on, so I was thinking of stick my nose in some interesting smaller places. Places called "Port ..." pique my interest.

I've been to Ramsey, before, but it's not terribly appealing. Either I find some wall to dry out against or it's a mile's row to the shore end of the Queen's Pier.

I quite like Ramsey. It's what I call a "real place" there's a regular small cargo ship and timber, bricks stone and stuff in the harbour area.

True. My main worry would be not finding a place at the wall.

You can tie up next to the ship. In reality there's lots of wall space especially further in, past the swing bridge. I would avoid being on the North wall near the entrance, the swell from Easterlies can be bad there.

Haven't been to Ramsey in years, but always enjoyed my visits. Never found space a problem, even in TT week but rafting out from the walls was the norm. Most visitors had twin keelers or similar, single keelers need to get on the inside of course but this was (usually) cheerfully accomodated. Above the bridge was very full of local boats but many moved to the gated marinas when they appeared.
Berthing became more of a problem when the local Harbour Master's role was reorganised and local fishing boats spread themselves into areas formerly reserved for leisure craft. I think that issue might now have been improved.
Re Port e Vullen, I seem to recall a small beach but it's very open, I wouldn't have seen it as anything but a short-stay anchorage in calm conditions but, then, single keelers fairly often anchored by the Queen's pier which is no better or worse I suppose.
A strong Easterly isn't pleasant in Ramsey.

Thanks, much obliged. I one time I went there I was on the wall seaward of the swing bridge, which was OK but there was precisely one space when we went in, which has made me a bit wary since.

I remember talk of putting a gate or sill in, perhaps for the stub which lead to the Mooragh Park lake. Any progress on that?

Many thanks. Any hint of strong easterly and I shall be in either (a) the west or (b) Kirkcudbright ...
