Had a lovely (if hectic) five days in the South of France last week and weekend and really enjoyed it.

Ok so some will say the med is not all its cracked up to be and its easy to look at a short break through rose tinted glassed but it was such a welcome change from Solent or Irish sea boating. Still love UK boating but for other reasons but what took me quite by surprise is how well organised SoF boating is. Marina could'nt have been more helpful and charges were really quite reasonable compared to Hamble.

The guys at Aire DeBoom's at Port de la Rague were first class, waited on Saturday with the lift on standby for the boat to arrive late as French Plod had decided to be awkward and kept stopping the truck every three of four hours for a tea break. Even the VP engineer hung on to Pdi the engines and check everthing over for us.

Place was spotless and the engineering shop was like an operating theatre. Lady in reception was really helpful and could'nt do enough to make sure the boat would go in the water on Saturday so we could do all the Pdi checks and sea trials before the customer arrived with his family.

Anyway here are some piccies and I can highly recommend La Napoule and La Rague as a base for the SoF, it so handy to every where, Cannes, St Tropez, Monaco, Antibes etc and quite a bit cheaper.

This is the view of La Rague marina from the Castle at La Napoule.

Boat eventually arrived and after a wash was ready for dropping in.

New shiney props all fitted.

How many fuel berths in the Solent have this view?

Enterance to La Rague marina.

Quick whizz around to La Napoule to make sure she fitted onto the new berth ( a S/seeker Portofino 46 just squeezes in beside us).

First trip out to the Islands off Cannes with new owners family.

Milled about in the Island bay having a shuffty at all the sexy stuff.

Stopped off here just south of Antibes and gave the resturant a phone and they sent someone out to take us in for lunch.

Back on berth in the evening after a great day running the boat and handover.

And as if by magic the locals put on a fireworks display just to celebrate the final handing over of the boat and keys. Sat with a few glasses on the boat till late.

Early morning breakfasts were at this cafe overlooking the Marina.

All in all a great few days if a lot of hard work. Apologies if some see this as a promo thing but lots of people talk about the SoF and med boating and the various places and what they are like but some never get to see where we are talking about so thought it would be interesting for those that haven't to get a flavour of what it is like.

I've never seen the attraction, and probably never will. I like being out when it's F6+ and wet, and enjoy the boating part, not the being on the boat stationary and going to restaurants. If I want to travel, I'll jump on a plane and go to Alaska or Peru or Sweden etc. Boating is for battling against seas bigger than you've ever seen before, not posing in the sun. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

What a blinkered post, Brendan.

What makes you think that there is no wind in the Med? There are far more F8-F10s in the Golfe du Lion, the Bouches de Bonifacio and Cap Corse, to name but 3, than in the Channel. What's more, the fetch accross the Med (up to 500 miles) is far more than across the Channel.

As for places to go ....
I've been from SoF to Corsica, Sardinia, Italy, Pontine Islands, Aolian Islands, Sicily, Malta and Tunisia on a single cruise.

Yes, you can just pose in the sun, but that's your choice. The point is, you have the choice.

Have you any real experience of the Med, or is this just sour grapes?

Tongue firmly planted in cheek. Read his line about some saying the Med is not all it's cracked up to be. There was a time when humour was common around here.

Well smarty pants.... diff between IPS and o/d on 40' sports cruiser makes very little difference to acceleration in fact probably a little in favour of o/d, anyway I am not speaking to you anymore Mr 'I am past 1000 posts' Moose...you've hurt my feelings now and I am a very sensitive person, I hope your proud of your self.....bully!

Great stuff, nautical. We had a season in La Napoule ourselves and its an excellent spot. Not on the same berth by any chance are you? Great spot for kids as well with the safe little beach next door and there's a little caff on the sea wall adjacent to the beach from where you can keep an eye on them. I see you found the Lerins as well for anchoring
I sort of agree with you about La Rague. Yes its an efficient operation compared to most of the Med but I did'nt find it cheap. I had my boat lifted and scrubbed a couple of times there and it was nearly €800 a pop which I thought was extortionate. In fact maintenance in SoF is very expensive altogether. Every visit by an engineer seemed to cost €1000 whatever they do and however short it is. Maybe as a Brit they saw me as fair game. Anyway I've found things cheaper in Spain and the Balearics but, of course, the food is not anywhere near as good
Are you in the SoF permanently now?

Hi Mike, I think maybe because we e.mailed ahead from a marine co they were probably more reasonable with us, lift off transport and hold in slings for props and pdi and then into the water was 220 euro, Hamble Point £280 a pop.

Seems like permanant thing at the moment, three more to do over the next six weeks but not complaining! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif We have a dealer now in Nice.

We were on the finger that runs straight out opposite the Ships Store chandlery.

Agree the little beach is great for kids and the resturant/cafe right next to it was bob on for lunch.

Good stuff. I don't think you got special treatment - I arived at la rague no booking no nuthin some years ago, boat on truck and they sorted it all out with the same enthusiasm you describe.

Caution needed at la rague overwinter - tiny flecks of brake dust and steel come down from the train line so boat best with a layer of unbuffed polish or a proper cover.

Wind for brendan is more plentiful a little further west - marseilles has 200 days a year of F6 or above. Yeeha!

I wd also imagine that for a visitor to lanap it is loads cheaper to rent a car from the airport. Actually, given the price of some taxis it might even be cheaper to *buy* a flippin car at the airport....

Thanks, agree taxis are rip offs round Cannes / Nice, 100 euros from nice to lanap about 25 mins drive. Thought about getting a small car and leave it with our man in Nice then just have him drop it off at airport the morning we arrive.

Spent a fortune on taxis running about getting bits and pieces. Its amazing even with most of the Pdi done at the factory how many odd and sods need doing after road transport. Even with full shrink wrapping the road dirt seems to get sucked in through the holes for the strops so a whole day lost just cleaning and polishing.

Tother thing I quite like about SoF is the lack of fuss in and out of the marina's, no one ever uses the radio everyone just seems to know what to do where to go and gets on with it. Considering there must have been about 100 boats out around the Islands off Cannes we did'nt hear one converstaion on the radio. No speed restrictions either except for round the islands, just get out of the marina and give it welly.

Still like UK boating though for more of its grass roots atmosphere, SoF boaters seem to keep themselves to themselves and there is not the same banter or hoping on and off each others boat and there is definitely a pecking order relative to the size of your boat.

Agree with you on Marseille. We were in Port Louis for a few weeks last Jul/Aug and I don't remember any day out when the wind did'nt blow up either all day or at least late morning and there was even thick fog one day. Bloody tiresome and the water was a lot colder than the Cote d'Azur, in fact almost E Channel like. Brendan would have felt right at home
LaNap was a €90 taxi ride from Nice airport 3 yrs ago. I guess it's €100 now. Yup, car hire much cheaper but the schlap by bus over to the other terminal and the interminable wait at the Avis office was enough to make me take a taxi

It's the same all over the Med. People are on their boats so much less often than in UK marinas because most owners live in a different country and often speak a different language anyway so there is little or no 'craic' in Med marinas. As it happens we're on drinking terms with a couple of our boat neighbours but only because we met them by accident. It's something I miss from the UK, I have to say

Sorry, Brendan.
Next time, I'll try to engage brain before operating keys. I'm too used to my (yottie) brother coming up with serious comments in the same vein.
