Last Saturday, whilst leaving Poole, 2 seen close by. Been in and out of there many times but first sighting in these waters. How common are they there? Seen dolphins nearby, but not porpoises before.

there were sightings in the solent in the summer, outside yarmouth for a few days, cowes and in the eastern solent too. I've only seen then playing off start point and around the channel islands.

magical creatures....

When the sea hogs jump, stand by the pump..

An old sea saw regarding sighting of porpoises. The times that I've seen then in Poole and Christchurch Bays have been immediately before a bit of blow.

Some truth in that I guess, forecast was OK but blow it did, south of the Isle of Wight later that day, 7's gusting 8's, but a great sail from dawn to late evening. Must remember to reef down in plenty of time on next porpoise sighting.

Guy from the yard saw a porpoise swim past my boat in Ipswich a couple of weeks ago!

I was not happy to miss that. Jem.

Saw one couple of weeks ago off Southend Pier. Only other one i've seen was off Horse Sand Fort last Summer. And That was on a June/July cruise from Ipswich to Plymouth and back. Didn't see a single bloody dolphin, basking shark, sunfish, whale or anything large really. Could of sworn I saw a penguin off Dover though !

Saw them early Oct in the Wallet off Essex coast....

They are much more shy than dolphins IME, and you only ever get fleeting glimpses... but marvellous creatures..

Also saw them last year off Kentish Knock a good way out in the Thames Estuary around April time....

Talking of penguins, last week, a sailing friend showed me a photo of himself recently in Antartica, on land with a large group of penguins (he was there on a fisheries protection vessel ), I was really envious.

Seen plenty of seals in the Orwell (one alongside boat in Woolverstone a couple of weeks ago), but not yet seen a porpoise there. Nice to know they visit the area.

Saw a lone porpoise off Bradwell on the Blackwater last Monday........ first one I've seen all year but a fellow Tollesbury sailor assures me he sees them in the Blackwater most times out.

We were sailing backwards at the time........ 4 knots of wind making about 1 knot through the water against about 2 knots of tide.

Probably the only reason we spotted it as it was so close I heard it blow. It surfaced to breathe 4 times in quick succession on a line which meant it may have swum directly under the boat then disappeared probably to continue feeding.
