My attention was drawn - I could scarcely miss it - to this odd popup.

I'd always had the clear understanding that 'stranded' applied to the EDGE of the ocean..... I s'pose this is one of the consequences of having 'editors' wot don't edit.
 
Giblets is quite right but presumably the origin of the word comes from strand= beach.

So stranded used to mean beached but now has a wider meaning.

Yes, but metaphors should be used wisely, particularly when they they relate to areas where the actual rather than metaphorical meaning might apply. For example, I am quite comfortable with press reports of cruise ships drifting without power which describe the passengers as being stranded, but uneasy with the vessel itself being so described when it is in fact the opposite.
