poorly paid coastguards

You may be right but what you "don't know" or "imagine" hardly puts things "into perspective".

I can't find any advertised rates of pay for the lowly "burgerflippers" but it's about 18K for trainee business managers with prospects of up to £45k

The McDonalds workers resistance website http://mwr.org.uk/home.htm gives advice to workers to ensure they are being paid the minimum wage! Maybe things are not so rosy at the bottom end of the scale there either.

A far better comparison would be to compare the salaries paid to coastguard workers with those paid to members of other emergency services but you would have to compare like with like. It would not be fair on firefighters, police out on the streets, ambulance crews etc to compare them with a coastguard watch assistant based in a safe operations room.

Shut up Vic before you start on nurses pay!
 
The big difference is that the other emergency services are funded "locally" from local authority etc whilst the Coastguard are civil servants. The difference in pay between the various CS Departments is also quite significant and one of the key issues being contested by the CS Unions at the moment. This salary is fairly typical of the Assistant Officer grade - salaries are often made up by shift allowances to compensate for the unsocial hours.
Civil Servants are much-maligned but they are also fairly low paid at the lower grades.
