Poor man seeks south coast berth

I am lucky enough to have a berth in Portsmouth which isn't costing much by the going rate but I've had enough of the theft, particularly as last time they took everything (including the frying pan!). I can't afford £3000+ for most of the marinas and I've done some research but I keep drawing blanks...

Does anyone know of a boat yard / marina / club which might squeeze in a 7m yacht (fin keel, sadly) at a nice price? Anywhere about 60 miles East or West of Southampton would be fine. About £1400 annually is the max otherwise I'll just go to Wales instead... A nice friendly club with moorings would be ideal.

Feel free to PM me if you know of somewhere I can try...

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried Emsworth marina? There is a sill which restricts access, but it wont be anywhere near as much as £3K.

[QUOTE Have you tried Emsworth marina?
Emsworth Yacht Harbour will cost you £1953 and has spaces now. The sill dries 2.1m above datum.

Langstone clubs with moorings are Eastney C A and Tudor S C, and umpteen in Chichester - suggest contact HM's who also have their own moorings.

South Coast mooring

Try www.cracknore-hard-sailing-club.co.uk
They have trot moorings in Southampton Water for boats up to 32ft. Current cost about £350 / year I think. Small dinghy storage area so about 200m to row. No security from the club but all moorings within range of military port guards - don't get a lot of theft!

There are a few clubs in Southampton Water with swinging moorings, I know of Southampton Sailing Club, Hythe SC and Marchwood SC. I believe another option in the area would be Husband's yard close to Marchwood. A Google search will give a bewildering selection of clubs and moorings around Southampton! The only caution I would add is to mention that I bought a boat with an encapsulated lead keel, so can't use a half tide mooring (cheap) or the mud will abrade through the hull and wick up through the hull moulding (expensive). With a steel, bolt-on keel, you'll find that being a river, boats always swing downstream on the ebb and dig their own lake to sit out the low tide. Of course, you don't have to strip antifouling off the keel at the end of the season!

Just found a useful listing on the ABP site: http://www.southamptonvts.co.uk/marinaslocs.htm
Gives contacts for all local clubs.

Thank you all for your replies. I've moved, for the winter anyway, to a Premier marina. Last night I sailed home in the dark, left my boat in 15 minutes without putting my back out removing the outboard, had a hot shower and drove home, bliss.

I will never leave my boat on an insecure swinging or detached pontoon again. It's a really sad fact that there are evil b******s out there who will thieve from boats but as it is the case, and it is increasing, it just isn't worth the risk on such an investment and supposedly my place of relaxation!

Gosport Boatyard .... I pay £1300 for a swinging mooring for 30 footer off Hardway ... taxi boat every day of the year ... handy car park ... sailing club 100 yds from taxi jetty ... or is that too close to Portsmouth?

Sadly I think for the time being I won't want to leave my boat anywhere there isn't a light, camera and a secured gate protecting it. It's a great shame it has to be that way, particularly when most people on this type of mooring are the ones who can least afford to deal with the theft and vandalism.

I'm just about to give up my berth at Fareham Marina (have relocated to Portland). Half tide pontoons but drying to soft, fin keel friendly, mud. Locked gate and reasonably secure car park. Very reasonable prices and good pub next door!

Check out http://www.farehammarina.com/ or give Katherine a call on 01329 233255.

Simon

Unfortunately I was in the Fareham channel and thats where all the thefts have been happening, although not from the marina as far as I know. However I wouldn't go near that area now...
