The previous post generated two points of view, one that a compression test is a wate of time and the other that it generates useful information. But as I requested it and it has been done then there is no going back. The results were 310, 400, 390,390 (converted from bar)> The french mechanic thinks that this is not a major problem. The injector in the offending cylinder was not working correctly and has been put right. His proposal is to put it back together, give it a good blast and see what happens. So as that corresponds to the advice given from the last post I will give it a go. Thanks for eveyones input.

dont think I would be going through the effort of stripping down for that sort of difference. Its a "wait and see". Does it get worse - then you may have to do something. But possibly not until it is bad enough for one cylinder to stop firing.

A compression test is a perfectly good way of detecting something wrong since its a simple comparison of 4 cylinders that should be the same. Sure a leakdown test will tell you a little bit more about how bad it is ( all cylinders leak down over a time period) but to say a compression test is a waste of time is silly.

Best of luck! Dont turn into a mechanical hypochondriac listening for every rattle or knock. Its painfully expensive - I know!. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yep I did go down to the boat but although the promise was made to put it all back together for the weekend it was not done. A new promise given for today which I hope after many phone calls will be achieved. Hopefully back there on Thursday or Friday to go for a run.
