Does anyone know if Poole Town Quay is still open for yachts?

I need to be alongside in Poole to meet darling daughter and have an aversion to the heat trap boat parks that rip you off for thirty odd quid for showers, water and power I don't need and skinny wobbly pontoons with halyards frapping all night. Town quays are so much better.

I recommend the town quay in Lymington, by the way. Off the try Bucklers Hard quay tomorrow.

Currently anchored in Newtown Creak. A very nice chap in a launch assured me that it's free to anchor but a donation to the nature reserve is optional. I gave him a fiver.

If you can avoid the daytime pleasure boats, then you can tie on the quay early evening.

However, AFAIK it's still under the control of Poole Quay marina and fees are similar to going in the marina. But you can use their toilets etc.

You may want to give the marina a call to check. You'll probably be surprised at the high price too.

Cheers

The commercial boats tend to use the quay now but It's worth giving the Poole Quay Marina a call. I didn't think the rates were high when we visited, marinas all seem to be £16 - £22 for a 24', Ahem without bowsprit ;)

Beats extortionate B&B prices!

Before the new marina was built across the river, the quay was still used as an overflow when the tiny joke marina was full.

Now there's the new marina I expect they'd like you to use that.

As l'escargot says, there is no quay at Bucklers Hard, it's either mid river moorings or the eye-wateringly expensive marina.

Perhaps the extension to the fuel pontoon which is walk ashore, would be the equivalent of 'the quay'.

Cheap option ( in this loverly weather) is to arrange mobiles, pick up at fuel dock or town quay then off round the harbour to anchor..and back
Spend the £30-40 on a nice bottle of wine instead?

I suppose you might be able to make an arrangement, though it's not exactly the most customer oriented place; otherwise good luck tying up there, and isn't that the bit with dozens of dinghies tied up so inconsiderately with as short painters as possible ?!

My impression was that you CAN still go on the town quay, but are likely to get 100 tons of yellow painted trip boat parked outside you.

The short stay pontoon just in the entrance - just where everyone misjudges the turn coming in (don't ask!) was £6.00 for 4 hours last year for 24 ft.

Perhaps the OP meant Beaulieu where you can more alongside a quay type thing and dry out. Never done it myself but a friend parked his 20 footer there last year and said it was wonderful.......no idea of the cost.

Call the marina for short stay availability. You can't just moor on the quay which is wall to wall tripper boats without permission. The Quay marina was built to provide visitors berths, both overnight and short term to free up the quay itself.

From the PHC website:

"Berthing at Poole Town Quay

The Quay will be used for berthing visiting leisure craft in excess of 15 metres. Boats less than 15 metres will berth on the Quay mainly as an overflow from Poole Quay Boat Haven, but there may be some berths available for this size of boat at other times.

Space is extremely limited in any case and care must be taken to avoid blocking public steps or assigned berths. Short stay berthing to wait for a bridge lift may be available to the east of the sculpture.

Poole Quay Boat Haven staff must be contacted in any case before berthing on the Quay and their directions complied with."

I've not been there for 25 years but I seem to remember you can get a very strong current ripping past the town quay at Poole which can catch the unwary.

Yes.

Your post just made me remember something from a couple of years ago.

Whilst waiting for a day fishing boat to leave the fuel pontoon by the bridge in Poole, we watched him misjudge his departure and drift broadside into the bridge. He struggled to get off even with help as he was pinned by the current. He did suffer bent rails and some scraped paint.

Not surprisingly, I gunned it up tide, away from the fuel jetty once I had filled up.

Cheers

If your an RNLI supporter, why not ask them if you can come alongside? ;)

No mooring alongside the lifeboat/police boat jetty by the bridge. All other RNLI is in holes Bay through both bridges - and no mooring because the site is being developed and most boats are in Cobbs Quay.

Short stay at the PHC Haven to pick up crew is not a problem - that is what the facility is for.
