Further to the earlier post a good friend of mine who is a very reluctant hero received a very nice letter from Dorset Police. He has allowed me to reproduce it here but does not want his name mentioned.

Dear Mr *******

On the 26th August 2006, I am informed that you entered the water at Poole Quay to assist in the saving of a male that had fallen into the water.

I appreciate that others may have assisted you, but your actions alone in entering the water between the quay itself and a boat alongside was courageous given the potential danger to your own safety in those conditions.

The gentleman concerned I am told, has made a recovery from the incident that night but the medical staff that initially attended to him at Poole General Hospital stated that if he had been in the water for only a further short time he would have probably drowned.

Your actions that night saved the gentleman’s life and was commendable.

I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Poole Police Division and the other emergency services that were involved, to thank you for your prompt and courageous actions that night and trust that you have not suffered adversely from your experience.

Yours Sincerely

Richard Huntley
Inspector
Poole Division.

Too late, everyone round here already knows exactly who he is!
It's a nice touch to see some official appreciation.

The relunctant hero(s) obviously deserve praise, but I gether the two police officers who were on the scene administered CPR, which must also have been a life saver.

Not proud to admit I was only a few feet away from the incident, fast asleep, never heard a thing.

I don't want to blow my own trumpet but the police were so busy with the victim I took one of their pocket books and wrote down the helpers names and addresses, shows that it is important to get these details as they can now have closure knowing he is OK, and receive the thanks they deserve. They were suspicious giving it at first but I think this shows why it is important, also if things had gone the wrong way a coroner would get the full facts, the police were very busy trying to save him and deserve praise as well as mentioned by Geoff.

German U-boat Captain: I am making notes, Captain, and your name will go on the list; and when we win the war you will be brought to account.

Captain Mainwaring: You can write what you like, You're not going to win the war!

U-boat Captain: Oh yes we are.

Mainwaring: Oh no you're not.

U-boat Captain: Oh yes we are!

Pvt. Pike: [Singing] Whistle while you work, Hitler is a twerp, he's half-barmy, so's his army, whistle while you work!

U-boat Captain: You're name will also go on the list! What is it?

Mainwaring: Don't tell him, Pike!

U-boat Captain: Pike!
