Thinking (probably dreaming is more accurate) of sailing from the Solent to Poole sometime in August and whilst there is plenty of passage planning advice I am struggling to find any pointers on where I could collect/drop off crew without getting deep into congested waterways testing my close quarters nervous boat handling...... yes I can read Visitmy harbour and Reeds but the experience of the forum is a wonderful thing. I'm even considering the idea of using the dinghy to Baiters Park slipway. My crew would then have a 3/4 mile walk to the train station. So this is a quick drop off/collection point question. And if I spend a night on the hook in the quieter parts of the harbour should I expect to pay harbour dues?

You can drop off crew at the Poole Quay marina as a short stay. 20 minutes walk to the station. Alternatively spend a night in Poole Yacht Club marina just past the ferry terminal. Similar walking time to the station. Baiter not a good place to land from a dinghy as there is nowhere really to anchor close enough, and it is usually a lee shore. No harbour dues to pay if you anchor anywhere in the harbour, but none of the anchorages are close enough for a dinghy ride to the quay.

Thanks Tranona, just phoned Poole Quay "Boat haven" to confirm and it sounds perfect for a quick turnaround, just got to fix the crew.
And thanks for the encouragement DJE, that's the plan!

Three most popular anchorages are Goathorn, Pottery Pier (off Brownsea) and Shipstal. With your draft you can get all the way round the islands. If you have time go up the river Frome to Wareham.

Last summer I did that based on forum advice including yours with our Wayfarer and it was great. If I can get there from Chichester with our big boat I will feel well chuffed.

The first "long" passage I did in my Eventide 35 years ago was the opposite way from Poole to Portchester for a weekend. Only got back as far as Lymington, beaten by adverse tide and westerly wind. Don't try getting out of the Solent in those conditions!

This will be useful if you haven't got a copy

Beware and check in case there have been any Beeching - like train changes, but I always found Wareham a lovely spot for crew swaps, and a delightful trip to get to ( though one has to get the tides right ).

Poole main railway station is only a short walk / taxi from the quay / marina.
