So thinking of a trip this weekend...

I used to go to Poole quay before the new marina all the time and loved it.

Looked at the new ish marina and the prices....£4 a metre....WTF

East Cowes is not even this price..!...Cowes yacht haven is even cheaper.

So for my Targa it would be £40 ish for a night....that is a price i will not pay!

No wonder it's always half empty every time i go past by bike.

I didn't think you could go on the quay anymore unless you had a really big one that is..maybe i should ask in that case..!!!!

Sounds a bit of a bargain to me try St Kats (£70.00 with a bit of power), Limehouse,Imperial Wharf or South Dock. ?

But the Solent is cheaper...i would expect it to be the other way around.

maybe Poole council think that if i have a boat i must live in Sandbanks...!!!

We just spent last Friday & Saturday night in Poole Boat Haven and enjoyed every moment. Berths with direct access to Poole town and 17 mtrs at £4.00/ mtr is £68.00 per night.
Compare that with Shamrock Quay, berthed in the middle of an industrial area at £4.50/ mtr is £76.50 per night. :disgust:
I know where I would rather be. incidentally Poole was pretty full both Friday & Saturday night. I wont be returning to Shamrock. !!

Why should the Solent be more expensive than Poole? If you take the Harbour dues off the price would be comparable to Solent prices anyway. if you can't afford another 6 quid to berth your boat perhaps you should consider a more economical mode of propulsion..:D:D.

I think our Wives are walking buddies. if we'd known you were in our neck of the woods we'd have raided your fridge (again)

I agree. I wouldn't pay £40 a night to moor. What about anchor behind brown sea. Been a few years since I've been there but it was nice.

It's towards the upper end of what you might expect but compared to some of the Med / SOF berths it is a bargain although I did once see a picture of the ice cream sellers in that part of the world which would soothe the pain somewhat :)

The extra amount over what you consider acceptable is fairly small in the overall cost of your boating and compared to Salterns they're giving berths away. It's also likely that a larger boat could fit on your berth so they are losing out on revenue by selling you that slot.

No one likes spending money, me least of all but try to put it into perspective. Potter along at tick over for a few miles or have a night at anchor off Brownsea Island to compensate :)

unfortunately marina berthing costs have priced me out of boating :(

Certainly in the usual spots around the Solent but there are alternatives if you think laterally. We pottered up the Fareham Creek on Sunday and there are a lot of pontoon moorings suitable for a motor boat. Yes, you need to think about wind generation or solar to keep batteries topped up and you won't have the security of a marina berth but you will be saving a lot of money compared to the Gosport Marinas which in turn save you a lot of money compared to places like the Hamble.

If you want to park up, walk down to your boat and set off into the Solent you will pay for the privilege.

Henry :)

I don't think it is cheap compared to the SofF. For a 10m boat in Beaulieu Sur Mer it is €33 in summer including power. The water is blue, lots of anchorages, friendly locals and people wave.
For a 17 m boat it's €92 so the Poole rate is better.

I think £4 per metre is pretty eye watering but it's a small marina with a big demand. I've used Brownsea Island buoys a lot and dinghied over but that's not without issue. For places like Poole I get the feeling that the morality of a high charge isn't considered whereas Cowes tries not to price out the boating fraternity.

Straight forward supply and demand. It is operated by the Harbour Commissioners who are not subsidised. However, for similar price (if boat less than 38') you can go into Poole Yacht Club on a quiet sheltered berth with a good clubhouse and 10 mins walk to the Quay.

I can remember seeing over 80 boats rafted on the quay...all having a great time..apart from the inside boat that is. Now how many boats go the on a sunny Saturday...10..20 maybe..it's just daft in my eyes.

I must say that i was working at the council when they built the thing and built the flats next to it...the lust for revenue overtook any sense of doing what people actually wanted. Its just such a shame that's all.

What happened would be like to Folly Inn building a big marina and charging £40 a night...traffic would drop off.
