Poole harbour marinas (annual berth)

As a result of an upcoming prospective house move, I may have to relocate the boat to the south coast. I've researched the Weymouth/Portland marina's (quite like the Portland marina) but I have zero knowledge on what's available in or around Poole harbour. The boat is a 13m sailing yacht (2m draft). Can anyone shed light on what options I have for annual berthing in the region.

Two club marinas - Poole YC and Parkstone YC. Based on my experience of my club's marina I would expect a long waiting list for berths.

Commercial marinas are Cobbs Quay (MDL) and Salterns. The former needs two bridges lifting bridges to be traversed to get out to sea.

Not sure about the smaller 'residential' marinas on the North shore just upstream of Poole YC or whether permanent berths are available at the haven marina but I would find those berths rather unrestful.

Mind you the new bridge seems to be having a lot of issues. It's a bit of a bummer when you are outside planning to come in at a certain time and the bridge fails :-(

Cobbs Quay - as well as the two bridges - had a reputation for silting up ( a boat drawing 2 metres would struggle when I was there last but that was years ago ) and lacklustre maintenence, have things improved now ?

Another option might be a mooring on the River Frome or the small marina at Redclyffe, a long way from the harbour entrance and tidal access but a lovely place and no bridges.

The commercial marinas with all tide access, and no lifting bridges: Poole Quay Marina, Port of Poole Marina (these two run by Poole Harbour Commissioners), Salterns Marina and Lake Yard.
Commercial marinas accessed through the lifting bridges: Davis’ Yard, Cobbs Quay (need to check available depth for 2m)
Yacht clubs with marinas: Parkstone, Poole and Royal Motor. You would have to join the club of choice, but all have quite long waiting lists for marina berths, especially for a 13m boat.

If you can’t get into a commercial Marina, there are deep water swinging moorings available through Poole Harbour Commissioners, Lake Yard, Salterns or the major yacht clubs. They all have good water taxis. There is also a mid stream pontoon beyond the bridges run by Poole Harbour Commissioners.

With a 2m draft you would find access to the Wareham River a bit limited if you want to go out for a lot of short trips.

I didn't suggest Ridge as very limited time access with 2m draft.
Thinking about it, I would be more inclined to look at Portland or Weymouth, easy parking and access to the sea.

As an aside it looks like Salterns visitors' charges are now more aligned with the going rates elsewhere in Poole harbour, not sure whether others have increased theirs or Salterns have reduced them.

I have already had quite a good look in both Weymouth and Portland. TBH we really like Portland. it's just that the Poole marinas may end up being closer to home. Portland has an advantage of being considerably cheaper than Salterns (I have their estimate in front of me) - I guess because of Poole's relative proximity to the solent?

A lot depends on your budget and requirements in the Portland / Weymouth area.
There are several possibilities - Portland and Weymouth Marinas are both good, but you are restricted by bridge lift timings in Weymouth. Weymouth is however more sheltered than Portland. There is also Weymouth harbour - https://www.weymouth-harbour.co.uk/ which have marina berths but tend to be cheaper than the private marina, but parking can be a problem. For those whose budget doesn't stretch as far as marina prices there is Castle Cove Sailing Club who have many swinging moorings in Portland Harbour and have an active cruising / racing fleet - http://www.ccsc.org.uk/. ( Ferry service weekends, monday and wednesday evenings) There is also the Royal Dorset Yacht Club based in Weymouth town

CCSC & RDYC are on swinging moorings in Portland Harbour, very exposed in summer gales. You know if it is too rough to go sailing as you won't be able to launch your dingy!
