Poole harbour fishing weekend.

Morning,

I'm going out on the water this Friday for the weekend fishing around Poole harbour and surrounding areas.

Firstly at what tide height is there sufficient water to get up to wareham? Secondly where is the best place to anchor around the back of brown sea island?

And thirdly what's the best locations to fish?

tbh, ive not had much luck fishing in the harbour but of Old Harry Rocks ive had plenty of rays and dog fish. Inside the harbour a favourite place is near Stone island just inside the entrance near the chain ferry, usually loads of small fishing boats there just be careful at low tide as it drys out.
Inside the harbour its very shallow, especially round the back of Brownsea island. Pottery pier is nice and sheltered when theres an easterly but ive never caught anything there.
The nicest place to anchor up in my opinion is to the west of Long island up the upper wych channel. Havent been up the Warham channel in years so couldnt comment.

Hi Ian,
Ive not fished in Swanage bay, the ground is very weedy. But would recommend the race off Old Harry.
Other than that, the best fishing ive had was just of Portland Bill but its not somthing you want to be doing in a small boat and it is a trip from Poole.
I find Poole bay to be sadly over fished, even using mackerel feathers is no guarantee of a catch unless you go miles out.

Poole Patch / Poole Rocks and between Old harry's and Ballard Point has produced the goods for us, though we usually just follow the fishing trip boats!!
Wareham from hour before first high to hour after 2nd high as a rough guide, though the tide at Wareham is about 40 mins later (from memory) When you are there keep an eye on the steps in the quay, when its on the way between 4 and 5 after the second high its time to go.
Gets very shallow between the yacht club and the quay...not much more than 3ft in places.

This time of year the harbour will start to fish for flounder and there are plenty of schoolie bass around. Outside the harbour inshore marks to try would be the spoil grounds, the end of dolphin sands or any of the numerous banks shown on the charts these areas will be fished for cod and whiting with this time of year also being good for rays. Swanage bay fishes well for bream and rays in the summer months but will be rather slow now.
