Pont Y Werin, Foot Bridge over River Ely

Took this picture from the road bridge.Seems the structure is more or less complete I have heard it will be opened in June.

Great facility for walkers /cyclists to get around the Bay. Previously you had either a long walk up penarth road or could take your life in your hands by illegally walking over the road bridge by the barons Court.

Its further than you think, at average walking pace it would take a good hour from the Bridge to mermaid quay then another hour to cross the barrage and back up past penarth marina.

Is this a swing bridge?

I have noticed that all the yachts that were at Cardiff Marina have now disappeared. In fact all the large Traders have gone too.

It can't be good economic news for Cardiff Marina if they can't berth sailing boats anymore.

<snip>

From an inspection by inflatable there is a fulcrum fitting on the Penarth
side of the 'centre' span (next to the Waterbus in the photo.) I presume
they will complete it as a bascule bridge. I also noticed a 'chip' of concrete
missing off one of the piers with re-bar showing.
Next thing is they will close the bridge while they investigate the "rot".

From a council website "The bridge, which incorporates a 20-metre opening section to allow river traffic to pass, will open to the public on June 8."

nice picture

glad you posted that have been wonderin what it was like. Not been down since mid march. The spans were in carpark waiting for some huge crane!

The Bridge is excellent news for Cardiff Marina.

The bridge opens fully on the half hour and of course will connect the marina with the amenities on the Penarth Side and the other way around. We ourselves are also building the Bayscape Hotel which will includes 3 additional bars and 4 restuarants...all connected with the bridge and Bay Edge walkway.

The bridge however will not be operational until mid-June so we have moved the high air-draft boats (over 4.5m) to the phase 1 area of the marina (including the traders) until it is operational (ie downstream). Bookings have accelerated greatly recently which is pleasing. A trend we expect to continue during 2010.

Happy to provide more info. on the bridge and works around the area if of interest!
