My mate has one of those expensive Hobie canoes made out of polyethylene plastic. He has a sounder fitted with the transducer firing through a wet box in the bow. The box is stuck in with silastic but after a short period the fluid leaks out. Hobie's answer is that nothing sticks to it and just keep replacing the silastic. Any suggestions much appreciated.

A Little side track first.
If you ever wanted to fibreglass over PVC, standard plumbers pipe, like re running cockpit drains you soon found that standard resins and to some degree even epoxy resins would just slide off when cured. However if you used a very hot flame that would heat the surface very rapidly, you would see small black balls form on the surface, let it cool, glass over and no problems.

Now, I seem to recall a similar problem on a Tupperware tender; I recall we used a small gas flame to rapidly heat the surface to the point that small dark beads formed on the surface, we let it cool and applied sikaflex, can't recall what grade but it stuck well and lasted many years.

Perhaps you could try this on an old off cut or a spot above the water line and out of sight.

Hope this helps.

This stuff was recommended in an earlier posting when I wanted to stick wood to a PE dinghy.

3M #DP-8005 Scotch-Weld Structural Plastic Adhesive.

Seems to work OK.

I was offered one of those Bic tenders with cracks in. As you say nothing sticks to them, but I found someone doing a polyethylene repair kit.
Trouble is it cost £40. More than the tender was worth.

sikaflex will stick to it if the surface is roughened first.

[/ QUOTE ] Which Sikaflex product are you suggesting 291 or 292 or something totally different?

I believe PE comes in lots of different forms and what works with one will not with another. I think you need to be careful before spending a load of money that you have the correct system for your boat. Not very helpful I'm afraid as I don't know how to match repair system with density of PE!

"Serious Stuff" by Evostick claims to stick anything to anything and to be able to be used in wet conditions. My skepticism was destroyed when I tried to clean off the tools and the UPVC I had left the applicator on. Can't get the top off the tube now!

It's cheap too.

ICI whom I used to work for reckon that not much will bond to PE, which they invented.
However I have seen stuff bonded to PE using low melt PE stick and a melt gun that you find in DIY sheds. I would not use in any situation where my life depended on it, or for where my feet might get wet!
