IIRC the old 78s were made from bakelite


(yes should be 78s as "s" being used as a plural rather than a substitute for is or refering to something else)
 
78s

They certainly weren't made from Bakelite, because they softened and were mouldable when heated with boiling water. I seem to remember that shellac came into the recipe somewhere.

Wasn't that 45s and EPs that were made into ash trays? I seem to remember that 78s (and this is not my era you understand) used to smash into pieces, at least if I picked them up they did.
