Just curious given recent threads on the subject, but do you have the original invoice showing VAT paid, or originals of customs VAT payment if imported?
As a matter of fact i insisted on the previous owner's finding the official papers cause here in greece with the chartering business LOTS of mobos have NOT paid VAT...
I have been the one rasing the issue and being on the opposite side from Customs and inland revenue and knowing the general rules I see it as the responsibility of the taxman to ensure that any item sold or imported should have VAT paid when origionaly and not upto the "17th owner" to do so and if he cannot to have to pay the VAT again.
Look at when you take you car over to france do you have to prove that VAT has been paid or is it the case that when a car is first registered profe of VAT paid is required before it can be put on the road and if so should the asne rules apply.
I think C&E consider proof is difficult so this is a new sorce of income / tax and we just lie down all allow our selves to be f**ked.
If the RYA as any balls that issue neexs to be taken up with your govement and if you say "Oh we cannot do anything about it" You will be continuely be f**ked by your govement.
On a couple of issues when out VAT man came and said I must pay VAT of upto 100 000 ZAR I got legal advice and told him to p**s off and he did and went to and easier target who would lie down and allow the taxman to [--word removed--] him.
I hope someone out there might take heart from my expensive - and enjoy a snigger!
Lacking any VAT documentation, and very worried about purchasing from the Channel Islands, I went down the path of PartI Registration having been advised it puts the responsibility into the hands of UK C&E should French officialdom become awkward.
So forked out £150 for the extra Measuring Survey, another £150 for the Registration Fee. But I had to produce evidence of ownership for the past 10 years, and in so doing eventually traced right back 25 years to the first owner. Who had the original Builder's VAT receipt!
En route I made the mistake of slagging off someone in the Cardiff Registry Office for the alacrity with which my cheques were banked which contrasted with her dilatory approach to processing my application.
Oh dear! Then followed much tedious correspondence persuading each of the previous owners to produce, not copies, but originals of each Bill of Sale - only to have same rejected where the boat had been purchased a deaux but sold by one individual. It went on for months!!

Not snigger. Customs had quite extraordinarily wide-ranging powers. Apparently, now they are part of HM Revenue & Customs, the Revenue staff are keen to get the same powers for themselves.
The boat was originally bought in Ireland and named Lady "B", and I have an Irish Customs letter confirming VAT Paid on Lady "B". The second, (Irish), owner named her Puffin, and then my father bought her and Registered her Part 1 at the same time renaming her Rogue.
Not sure if Part 1 Registry confirms VAT Paid status, or whether the paper trail of sales/purchases confirms it.
As covered in prevoious posts - I cannot answer this question because I do not know!!!!!
My boat is is 30 years old. It has never left the EU. I have as much history as possible. My last bill says "all VAT due paid" on my second hand purchace through a broker. But do I have a single piece of paper saying VAT paid - No. Can I get one - No. Is any VAT due - No. Can I honestly tick either of your Poll boxes - No. Has the RYA been any help in this - No. Has Customs & Exise been any help in this - No.
