I'm hoping to solve two issues here.
1) My old boat has a thick Black stripe running around it. However, it looks unsightly because the lacquer is coming off in patches. So, the plan is to sand it down and repaint.
2) The general finish is tatty and faded so I'd like to give it a proper polish.
I'm on the verge of buying a Silverline sander/polisher, can anyone advise as to what type of sanding discs I'd need to go with it to get the lacquer off? I appreciate that some paint will come off too, I just need a solid surface to paint over.
Also, has anyone used the 3M "Fibreglass restorer and wax" product? it costs as much as the sander so i'd hope it would be good! but, it doesn't seem right having one product that does everything. Obviously ideal if it does though!
The boat is a small cabin cruiser over 30 Years old so i'm not looking for perfection, just to smarten it up a bit.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
