Polishing/compounding and decals - advice, please

When machine polishing a GRP hull, what do people do about decals, vinyl boat names, and the like? Work carefully around them?

Did this last winter using Farecla grp restorer and found that it worked very well and actually cleaned up 10 year old decals (Jeanneau) and left them with a bright appearance without causing any damage - so no need to avoid decals in that case.

I can still read the original name of my boat, raised above the remainder of the transom, where a previous owner has polished aggressively around it.

I've replaced my boat name twice now because of machine polishing over it. It needs replacing yet again. I'm just too lazy to try and clean around/between the letters.

I did it last week on Funky Monkey vinyl names with Farecla G3 and a sponge head.

Was a touch apprehensive though!
