these modern products.. is it still the case that a polish contains a mild abrasive, and a wax doesnt?
Since either the products require minimal amounts, or I dont use them often, I seem to have bottles of both. So, what do I do? A spin with the polisher with the polish product, and then the wax one- or just use one or the other? We are only talking gleam and shine here...not remedial work.

Correct - but while you are doing it, make sure the wax is decent quality and worth putting on. Then buff it up to a good shine.
Also remember not to wash it down with detergent, washing up liquid etc afterward or it will take the wax off again.
