Polars and VPP\'s etc

Ullo,

In the interests of skiunce, I've been trawling the wwwinterwebnet for performance data of our potential boats. Bearing in mind that our brief is "Good performance and rewarding sailing" I count a polar chart as a good indicator for same. The only problem I am finding is, errr, finding them!
I've got the Grand Surprise's and turned them into a chart here but I'm struggling to find the J-Boats anywhere!

What does the panel think, do you, in fact, ever look at them?? More to the point, does anybody know a decent site with a good range of them?

Dunno about the 92, (assuming you mean the 92s...?) but might be able to get the 105s.

A quick look at the polars you put up against our target speeds suggests that a 105 would be faster upwind above 10kts, but very slightly slower downwind.

Re: Polars and VPP\'s etc

Might be a silly question but have you spoken to the guys at J-UK down at Hamble. Either that or B&G 'cause they get used in quite a bit of their software.

Racing, I use them all the time.
Cruising, only when late for the pub.

Thanks for that. The 92s would be a fair "like for like" i think (similar waterline, a bit closer in cost etc), which is why I was hunting for the polars, to do a 20knot overlay.

Ta anyway, and thanks for your interest.

By the By, I've slung up some more pictures on the blog, so you can see what they look like "downstairs".

Maxsea has quite a large number of polar diagrams in-built, with the ability to add your own after empirical observation.

Re: Polars and VPP\'s etc

Fortunately I already have an application that can automatically build polars, believe it or not, it came with my watch! (Suunto M9i)
The issue with this however, is that you need to buy the boat first in order to get the hours and hours of faffing about in all conditions and angles to collect the data!

Not the cheapest way of doing it, granted, but a good idea.... Now to get it past the boss!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
