Poland/Krakow

Over ten years since I've been there, but it really is a jewel...albeit that once the East collapsed, there was never going to be a perfect moment between its 'unspoilt' state and the advance of commercialism (and the more welcome concept of consumer service). Poland needs international beers like a yacht needs a parachute.

My uncle Frank has less happy memories (but by no means of Auschwitz proportions), as I discovered after waxing lyrical about the place after my visit. "Been there", he laughed. He was a POW there (a better career move than his previous job, tail gunner in a Halifax). One winter's day the guards disappeared, someone said "The Russians are coming" and he walked west to the allied lines, minus his shoes.

I imagine they've cleaned up the Vistula since I was there, when I was told: "If you slip in, but get pulled out quickly, they might save the bone."

The Tatra mountains, just to the south of Krakow, are also well worth visiting. If you pass through Warsaw, the reconstruction of the old city after it was flattened to the last brick is nothing short of miraculous.

Poland generally, after centuries of being everybody's whipping boy, is finally coming good. In many ways it's a heartening place to visit. But take plenty of Ibuprofen.

I enjoyed it very much.

The Salt Mines are also worth a visit.

They know their vodka !

English is not understood much amongst the older people . Understandably.

B & B was very reasonable a couple of year's ago.

Lisilou (lounge and MoBo) has just got back from Poland - not sure if Krakow was included but she was impressed. She did a good write up of her trip in the Lounge.
