... Is not nice.

Having just read the Bosuns page at the back of the current issue I am unhappy to see not one, but two articles on the subject. When photos of people stranded in boats appear on here they are usually treated with sympathy and the odd 'ouch' comment, but the editors* seem to be indulging in finger pointing smugness that does boating no good. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Not that I am biased, but it is documented that I am the only person in Kent who can strand a boat of less than 5" draft. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Those pesky Goodwins get me (nearly) every time!

* Edit: I doubt they know how to use a computer and if they do then it is probably so buried by whisky corks and cigarette ash that I am quite safe. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I was watching the top one! It is Granville, the story I was told in the yacht club later was that the skipper (from Jersey) was "famous" for this type of thing! He and his crew had spent too much time in one of the bars and tried to rush out at the last minute. The didn't make it and were dragged back in until the next tide. It was fun to watch and I don't see any reason for not poking fun at them, there is a depth readout just above the gate. Would have been 2002 or 2003 I think.

You certainly aren't the only one! Happens all the time round in the estuary, if you don't go aground a few times each season then you're not trying hard enough /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif. Hope you're joking about the Goodwins, though /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

At the time of writing I have thus far avoided joining the seals for some sun bathing, how long this record can stand remains to be seen! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

the entrance to Pwllheli marina

Last year heading into the Ord we spotted the crew of a bilge keeler on the spit at the entrance inspecting their antifouling. How we laughed! My wife suggested we should be a bit more sympathetic as one day.... Needless to say, after a nice night at Orford, and a great race with a much larger ketch down the river the next day, which we managed to pass, we also ended up on the exact same spit..... Luckily our boat has a lift keel so we got off sharpish, but the Ketch crew were hugely amused.....

Then had to sail back with the marina with the keel jammed up and spend the afternoon taking turns snorkeling under the boat with a car jack to try and get the keel back down. Karma I guess....

No, he didn't fall over due to some quick thinking by the marina staff. They used a tractor to hold her in position whilst the tide fell, then drove the stakes in and made her off (as lescargot spotted). She floated off just fine on the next tide

Anyway, who hasn't ballsed up during their learning curve? I certainly have but it was some moons ago, I'll see if I can dig out a picture

Was watching the program "Coast" last night and was amazed to see that the cricketers from the Godwin Sands (including the presenter) had to call the RNLI out to rescue them!
