Hi Everyone,

I am trying to get an old (circa 1971) yamaha 25A outboard running. Does anyone know the points gap setting for the contact breakers. I currently have them at around 25 thousands but the proper setting would be appreciated. The engine has a serial number 648 L if that helps at all.

Many Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul,
I have here a Yamaha service manual which covers 25A shortshaft from s/n26301 on and longshaft from 55996 onwards.
So unless you were not giving the whole s/n, it's not quite right????????
The points gap is given as 0.3 to 0.4mm at max gap.
Timing is given as 3.23 to 3.43mm btdc at full throttle.
I would be willing to sell the manual as the outboard in question was stolen a while back!

Thanks for the info, the serial number is given as 648 L 37831. It's a long shaft motor with a red stripe on the cowl. The name Yamaha is in white plastic along the side of the cowl. The cowl itself is dark blue.

The manual would be useful if it covers this outboard. Let me know.

Many Thanks

Paul

Sounds like your engine is a little older than my manual.
I'm not very knowledgeable about variations in older Yamahas so I've no idea if much of it is relevant or misleading.
I get the impression 648 is a type number as the manual mentions some part numbers in the form e.g. 648-81800-41 (starter motor for electric start variant).
The manual has the number 656-28197-80 on the front cover.
If you want the manual I would sell it for £5 plus postage, or I can scan a page or two and email it but I'm not going to scan the whole thing!
Its in fair condition, not mint, slight dog ear corners, minor tear on cover, odd stains and thumb prints, but all there and usable. Its for a mechanic not a book collector! :-)
I'm in Portsmouth BTW.
FWIW my experience of twostrokes and outboards is give it a new a new plug, get the carb totally clean and if its any good it will go!
Good luck!
