Wanted to get a pocket PC that I could use for the boat.

Do I have to get a blue Tooth enabled one, or can I provide a cable link between the Pocket PC and my Garmain 128?

Also, seen the weatherfax recievers form NASA and wonder if anyone had hooked a pocket PC up to them successfully?

Anybody use the ChartPlotting software regularly? Any recommendations?

Pocket PC's don;t have the USB interface, but I'm sure there must be a way to attach all the laptop devices to something that runs off it's own batteries...

Anybody got ideas?

I've asked this question and other similar ones recently. Do a search in the archives, you should find some starters in there. I'll keep this thread bookmarked for any new replies/recomendations!

Hi,
I use Maptech charts with MemoryMap software on a Navman Pin.
Excellent bit of kit especially as it has a built in GPS.
Bought this package at the London show for under £400 from Maptech (?) I think.
So far all looks good but have yet to use it in anger.

I use a fairly old iPaq with an eBay bought GPS flash-card device. The nav software is Oziexplorer CE with self-scanned charts for my cruising area.
Power comes from the ships batteries via a USB cable and adaptor to a ciggy lighter output.
For internet access I use an infre-red connection to a Nokia 6310i mobile phone which is fine for Emails.

Issue of the moment is the stability of the new OS Windows Mobile 5.

It has a big advantage of having persistent memory, but users of HP Users Forum report problems requiring frequent resets, including hard resets. Reported problems include memory leaks, battery flattening and hanging.

Not much good having a PPC in a boat, if you need a PC to reload it after it crashes!
