Want to buy pmr walkie talkie radio things with headset to enable me to argue with Joanne from differant parts of the boat and wondered which set seems a sensible buy and where to get them?

I went to Maplins today and was told that the very nice set at £60 was half price until last week which miffed me a bit......

Great Graham as that was the set they showed me and gleefully said "these were half price last week and sold like hot cakes" ...... too late for me on that deal but they do look neat.

We have the Motorola ones, the higher spec'd ones, they do, or used to make two different specs. can't remember the code number though.

Haven't tried any headset with them. Not even sure if they fit on these.

Good and clear comms though.

Bought from RS Components.

Kids love 'em, and gives them a bit of VHF "training", in the broadest sense !

Personally I would recommend getting the motorola ones, they are more expensive but will take more stick.

I've got 5 (don't ask), various models and they all work well. The cheap ones we got for work all packed up after a couple of months. so we replaced them with motorolas which are still going well 2 years later.

be aware that the VOX setting is difficult to use as the sets are digital and take half a second or so to set up the call. I use the headset on occasions but press the button to transmit, which sounds a bit awkward but works quite well.

60 pound aint bad they started off 120 each when they first came out. They are digital so comms should beclear as a bell. cheaper than mobiles and no licence required.

The headsets work okay according to my friend who uses his for mountain biking.

I know. It was me that told you to go to Maplin in the first place... Bummer about the offer closing though. We played with them at the weekend, and they work brilliantly around the marina. The offer's still open on the multimeter, though.

Thanks Graham I am interested in the meter and may well go back and get the "double price" set at Maplins but it just upset me too much to know that I missed the offer especially as the salesman rubbed it in a bit......story of my life really.

Can you plug in a headset to look like a CIA man ?

Yes, you can get headsets. I'm trying to find ones that are pure VOX, though i.e. no PTT cos I'd like to use 'em on the bike as well...

We've got Motorola ones and they are fine when used like handheld VHFs. They also seem better built than many other makes. Have also tried headsets which are only OK provided that there is not a lot of background noise present. If there is, then they are unable to select what is a proper transmission . Only the ptt microphones work properly in this situation.
We've also tried a motor cycle set-up which gives far better reception in noisy situations but can only be used when you are relatively close to the other person as you both have to be connected by wire to the control box.

'er indoors bought me a pair of motorolas a couple of Christmases ago. They are very good but, to be truthful, a bit of an unnecessary 'toy' aboard a forty footer. Quite handy if ashore and missed something off the shopping list though.- and handy for keeping in touch with the tender.

Re: PMR vs 446SR

Actually the things you are on about are 446 mhz 8 channel low power no licence required devices.Normal range about 1-2K(ignore what is printed on the box) as opposed to PMR portable gear which is 5 watt vhf/uhf stuff which requires a DTI licence for use @60.00 pounds for 3 years for handsets.

<hr width=100% size=1>My little Princess/forums/images/icons/laugh.gifthe 33 of course.Shame its not just a bit bigger.

No mention of the USA version of these, 14 channels on slightly different frequency and not legal in Europe/UK. Prices in USA from $20 to $40 PER PAIR, basic set with AA batteries and not rechargeables at $20 from Walmart.

Of course I wouldn't dream of using mine over here, I found them useful for locating SWMBO in the shopping Malls. Anyone know what their frequency might clash with over here?

I have been using ICOM PMR radios (the IC-F22SR and its predecessor, which are a level above the normal domestic sets, being heavier built etc), together with one of their brand new headsets.

The headset is superb - comfy, secure, and not badly affected by wind (the isobaric type, not personal...). Features Vox switching, or PPT. The Vox switching is excellent.

The headset is on the boat so I don't have the model number to hand, but if you call Chris Ridley of ICOM, and ask which one Piers du Pré is using, he'll tell you! 01227 741 741.
