Before I start a round trip of all the boatyards in the Plymouth area I wondered if anybody else had done the same thing. I need to lay up in order to fit a new engine but don't want to spend a small fortune. Quite happy with out of the way type place but would prefer Devon side (only for ease of access). Boat is 30ft fin keel. Any thoughts welcome.

Weir Quay Boatyard, a few miles up the Tamar on the Devon side (beautiful spot) might be just what you need. If it's full up the owner Mike Hooton might have suggestions. tel 01822-840474

Theres a few places up the Cattewater. Thats on the Devon side. Cant remember there names apart from Yacht haven where I am. But not much room there. Higher up theres a few small yards. Should be cheapish. All seem to have lift out of some sort. I'd sail yourself down there and ask around. Will be no problem at one or other.

Laid up an Elizabethan 30 and then a Centurion 32 at Boating World, Landrake for about 10 years. Difficult to get to by River Lynher and also by road, but very sheltered and the yard was reasonable and very helpful;although it has since changed hands and I cannot vouch for new owners!

Sorry Yoda been away for a while. You have lots of options ranging from the marinas at QAB and Mayflower both of which have winter storage although limited with space and likely to be pricey. You can lay-up / store ashore at several places up the Plym including "Rocky Pindar" boatyard on the way to Plymstock on the east side of the Plym. Also Bostons Boatyard further along that road towards Oreston. On the Plymouth side of the Plym there is "Shore Store" just south of laira bridge. As suggested by others you have the options of Weir Quay north of Plymouth on the Devon side and the yard at Torpoint. Boating World at Landrake is a good long term bet if thats what you need.
If you need phone numbers before heading this way let me know - email is quicker. Try www.multimap.com for the precise locations if required.
Good hunting.

In answer to my own question and for information for anybody else out there thinking about laying up in Plymouth I came to the conclusion that all the yards work out about the same unless you go to the posh ones where you pay even more. My 30ft boat works out at about £500 for lift in and out, 6 months storage and cleaning off inc VAT. Not much space left at any yards. If anybody wants any more info happy to help.
