Wish I was one of you. Coz on Nov 27 Ewen Southby-Tailyour (the man whose yottie pilot notes were used by the Andrew in the Falklands campaign) will be talking about Blondie Haslar's life and achievements at the RWYC. It's organised by the SW Section of the Cruising Assoc, but I'm sure they'd find room for non-members if you asked nicely. Open from 1830, starts 1930. Email sevanscat(at)tiscali.co.uk if you'd like to go.

(Edited to take out scanable email address, to frustrate spammers).

The Cruising Association regularly has excellent quality speakers at its Limehouse HQ over the winter. I've never been disappointed. In fact, most of the speakers are pretty extraordinary people. Jimmy Cornell was the last speaker (I could not attend unfortunately). Next two lectures are; <ul type="square"> Wednesday

Crossing Diverse Oceans by Jan Meeks. Jan’s great grandfather shipped cargo from Alexandria in the magnificent Windjammers, her grandfather loved sailing around the islands in Sweden. She suspects she has salt in her veins. So when, in 1997, her son challenged her to join him in the first ‘Ocean Rowing Race’ from Tenerife to Barbados, she readily accepted. 101 days, 3044 miles and many adventures later they achieved their goal; they had rowed across the ocean. In April this year, ten years later, Jan challenged her son to join her in another race, across a frozen sea – Resolute Bay to the Magnetic North Pole. They set off in April. 24 cold days, 300 hard miles they had made it; they stood ON TOP OF THE WORLD. Jan would like to share her adventures with you this evening.

Going West slowly: Falmouth to the Canaries by Simon Fraser & Janet Gayler. Simon Fraser describes his journey from Falmouth to the Canaries, which took two leisurely summer cruises. Ten weeks meandering into the Spanish Rias and down the Portuguese coast to Lagos for the winter of 2006. Then on to Madeira and the Canaries this summer. [/list]Non-members are welcome to attend, and are asked to pay slightly higher fee.

Blimey! You Londoners don't half move fast.....

EDIT: Sorry about that, but my mind was on more literary matters, in particular a forthcoming award for maritime fiction.
