Do you feel a stroke of minor irritation when you see prices quoted "plus VAT". Most consumers are VAT payers and the professionals are better equipped to do the deduction.

The impression I get is that sellers are embarassed by the prices they are charging and try to minimze the initial impact.

I agree - it's just like those advertisers who are too shy to put the price and put 'POA' for everything.

On the other hand I thought retail outlets were supposed to advertise VAT inclusive prices? If not, they should do IMHO.

I believe retailers (selling to public) are obliged to show VAT inclusive prices. Where you find VAT extra prices are in trade outlets, or in trade mag ads.

This is the law in France. Any price aimed at the public must be stated with VAT. All advertised prices are deemed with VAT. Only in B2B can the net amount be used provided it is clearly stated without VAT.

You still see most boats advertised "plus VAT" in English mags.

Depends what the price is. I was delighted to find that ASAP had charged me £1.80 plus VAT each for spare filters for my secondary fuel filter. I did'nt think you could get anything for a boat at that sort of price.

VAT has not been paid on a boat (perhaps CI regd) and it is on sale in the EU. If it is to stay in the EU VAT will add 17 1/2% in the UK or an equivalent amount in any other EU country.

All prices are subject to offer anyway.

When I first entered the US I was irritated by the fact that most things had state sales tax added on. However I now think it is a good thing as one is constantly reminded of paying tax which tends to keep pressure on politicians to keep taxes low. The framers of the constitution were not perfect but they got one thing right, a bill to instigate or raise taxes has to pass with a two thirds majority.

This reminds me of an incident with my son - then aged abt 10 - who'd been saving for a computer and took to ogling computer magazines in the back of the car while being driven around on boring missions (shopping and the like) by me. After a while he took to ogling the prices too. 'Here, what's this VAT?' says a voice in the back one day, sounding like Archimedes in his bath. I explain. 'What's it for?' Says he. I explain. 'Well I think it's a blinking swizz.' He says in a tone of genuine outrage, matching my own views on the subject so closely I had to stop the car for fear of driving into someone else while laughing.
