I have a loo that last year constantly kept filling/overfilling so i replaced the water inlet thingy (name?). This year it started doing so again, and then changed to it not filling but going directly to the bowl. This is newish kit so not the old fashioned ballcock (will that get past the thought police ...). Any suggestions welcome please.

If this is the type of cistern with the push buttons on the top then the flush valve unit is letting by to cause the overflowing into the bowl. Sometime just a bit of muck on the sealing washer. Should be easy to take apart and check.

If lever type flush then the syphon unit in the cistern will be cracked and require replacing.

If the water level does not increase in the cistern but goes straight into the pan then the syphone is faulty . Dependant on make English or German you could get parts and repair ,if best Chinese, bin it and buy a three part syphone like a Derwent or Mcdee ONE you can get PARTS. FOR in the future?(dependant on size)

If it's a push button cystern then it is the bung not dropping, probable cause is the cable sticking. Replace the lot, not a long or expensive job.
