These Lowrance units are designed to appeal to American so called sports fisherman but the chartplotter part of it works perfectly well for anything the cruising yachtsman would want to do - OK it doesn't tell you when to tack, but do you really need that? you don't have to fit the sonar transponder and can use it as a plain chartplotter or you can just try the transponder inside the hull, mine works down to about 10metres, but I don't need it.
I have had no problems with mine that weren't cured by upgrading the software ( Y2K rollover week)
