I am getting a Beta 16 engine and have no sea water strainer fitted in my last old crappy engine which is now going to waste (not because of no strainer) :). The new beta engine manual says:

"The inlet sea cock should be 1” BSP to which a 7/8” / 22 mm hose connector can be fitted. The sea water pump is 22 mm OD to suit the 22 mm ID hose."

I cant seem to find a sea water strainer that does 22mm hose.
The small vetus strainer does a 3/4" hose, but not 7/8".

Anyone know of a good one? Else I'll have to use the undersized 3/4" vetus fitting and go from 3/4" to 7/8" hose with connectors..

Thanks

Make sure you get a strainer that is situated above the water line - that way when you have to clear all the seaweed it's very easy. Vetus make a suitable range but not sure about the hose size. I would query the '22mm' size of the seawater pump with Beta - it doesn't sound right. I have a 25HP Beta and that is 3/4" diameter - I'm sure your 16HP does not need more water flow. I would have thought that 3/4" hose should fit 22mm if heated in boiling water. Alternatively try Heater hose from a car factor - this should be OK as it's for hot water.

Be careful with your choice of hose type. Remember that the hose for the strainer will be under suction from the pump and should be reinforced to resist collapsing. Some car heater hoses are quite soft and might collapse under negative pressure.

I am surprised at that advice. I have just fitted a Nanni 14 which uses the same pump and used a 3/4" seacock and Vetus strainer. Had no problem with the piping.

Ah, I remember it well.

Come to think of it I don't remember it too well, but I recall that this was the worst bit of fitting my present Beta engine.

I would not buy the Beta fitting kit which only consists of parts from the ASAP catalogue anyway. In the end I went for one of those huge gun metal things that look like they are designed for a steam trawler. They have a male inlet to which you can fit your reducing socket for 3/4, and a female outlet to which another fitting must be mated.
In my (outdated) ASAP catalogue the unit is announced as: "HD Hull Mounted Gun Metal Type" (water inlet strainer 2).
The next problem is how to fix it to the boat because there are no lugs, brackets or holes on it at all. I used large Jubilee clips and a bit of lateral thinking. I tried to fix it with the static water line about 2/3rds up the thing - not easy in itself on a small boat.
I did have photo's but I appear to have lost them.

I predict your next dilemma will be sorting out 8mm fuel supply and bleed off.

On a previous thread I answered there is an alternative Water inlet Strainer(which I have @£24.95 from Force 4 Chandlery) The hose fittings are suitable for 3/4",25mm,and 1.5" hoses the flow rate is 150litres/minute,Grey plastic with transparent screw top,has a side mounting bracket built-in. It should be fitted at 8" above the water line and in an easily accessed position for regular cleaning of weed. Do place a vaseline smear on the threads of the lid to make it seal and easier to undo for maintenance. I empty mine every trip and turn the greaser to the stern tube at the same time, as a regular routine.

The Vetus one shown in Force 4's 2010 catalogue lists three; at capacities of 120ltrs/min for the 3/4"; 210 ltrs/min for the 1", and the 1 1/4" 330litrs/min.
The price shown was £96.95 for either of the Vetus, and similar side mountings built-in.

When I fitted my Beta 16 four years ago I decided not to change my existing 3/4" skin-fitting to 1" initially, but planned to upgrade if required. I used a cheap remote strainer from ASAP (part no. 402194 on their website). The arrangement has worked fine, never had an overheating incident, even at full chat for extended periods (it's good for the engine you know!). The Vetus strainers are well over priced in my opinion, the ASAP one is well made and does exactly the same job. The 16 is a lovely engine, but make sure you match your prop correctly. With my 14x11 2-bladed Radice 'sailing' prop I can easily cruise at 5.5 kts at about 2500 rpm, and get almost 7 kts full chat, 3600 rpm with no smoke (Varne 27).

I haven't fitted mine yet, but, I was cautioned about having something with a pressurised plastic screw top. It's not so bad if you can get it above the waterline, I don't have room.
I got the stainless one with a bolt on perspex lid from ASAP, the quality is superb.

The small vetus strainer does a 3/4" hose, but not 7/8".

You might find when you measure it that the inlet stub on the water pump is actually not 22mm but a little smaller.
I had the same issue when I was planning to install my Beta 722 six years ago. Could find no strainer made for 22mm hose. My Beta agent assured me that it would be OK to use 19mm hose and strainer instead.
When the engine arrived it turned out that the connector on the pump was only 20mm OD, plus one "barb" at the end making it 21mm OD at that point. It was not difficult to fit a 19mm hose on it.
I choose the basic Vetus strainer. Has worked fine, no over heating problems.
BTW you might get the same issue with sourcing an anti syphon valve for 22mm hose. However I believe Johnson makes one for that dimension.

The Vetus valves have stepped tails13/19/25/32 which is really useful when your engine like my Nanni has 19 coming from the heat exchanger and 22 at the injection point. The normal hose is a moulding with a bulge, but remove that and use the correct diameter hoses to and from the valve.
