Would appeciate some help in locating a suitable compass cover.
Local Chandlerys and boat Jumbles come up blank.
The original one is just beyond saving and the current arrange is a cover made up of gaffer tape and an Aldi plastic bag.
The Mrs is not happy with this, as she prefers Waitrose!!

Can you cover the original with latex (to 'fix it up') ? I am having to make assumptions here with no photos to go on. Has it simply cracked owing to uv degradation?

Could you place plaster of paris (there are other better mould materials actually - alginate is good) in a bowl and then take an impression from the old cover?

Or place alginate over the compass and use the alginate as a female mould and make cover from latex or polyester resin (uv resistant) or epoxy and paint it (as epoxy is not uv resistant)?

Local shop that sells 'seaside things' for kids..Buckets, spades..beach balls or a pet shop that sells Doggie playballs.
Stanley knife or similar and half an hour bisecting the ball to fit. Tin of spray paint of a colour to suit..job done. :)

Just as an addition.
My old binacle Sestral wears half a plastic ballcock float sprayed white...But I think most modern ballcocks are a bit on the small side now but you might be lucky in a Plumbers supply shop..

You could simply cover the area with a release agent and glass the whole lot in, let it cure, pull it off and tidy up the edges ands sand the exposed side smooth and coat it with Flow coat or paint.

Should only last about 20 years.

Working and keel box repair (internal) some time ago and had about half a cup of resin left, so covered the compass in a silicon based craft tape and slapped on 2 layers of 125 gram and topped with a bit of scrim to get a smoother finish.

Pulled it off the next day, gave it a light sand and painted with a spay can of car touch up paint.

Still there and looking great at least 5 years later.

Good luck and fair winds. :)
