Please Don\'t Hate Me,

A few posts over the last weeks have given me pause for thought,,,,,,,
Boats that wear a blue ensign are skippered by idiots and snobs.
Yachtmaster ticket holders know less and sail worse than people who rely on instinct and native wit.
Can it be true?
I don't feel any more stupid or posh than I did before I joined the CA 20 years ago,,,,,,,,,,, and I took the YM practical twice, once 15-16 years ago and again last year, just to check I hadn't forgotten much or developed any bad habits. Will that make me twice as dim? I doubt I run aground or get lost much more than people who haven’t bothered to have their ability checked,,,,,,,
But perhaps I'm wrong,,,,,,,,,,,?

Let me tell you something even worse about Ian....

1. Not content with driving a Land Rover and drinking Adnams,

2. He sails a wooden gaff cutter....

3. ...... which he had built for him just a few years ago.....

4. .......singlehanded!

Frankly, how posh can you get!

If he drives a Landrover he has to be a fine, upstanding pillar of the sailing community. imho.

Re: Please Don\'t Hate Me,

I'm in the CA aswell, but my red does me fine thankyou! Not a YM either, never seem to have the time, too busy working or cruising. Do have the books though and have read them a few times, just in case!

Re: Please Don\'t Hate Me,

I had a blue, simply because I belong to a club that lets me fly one. I found that there was a remarkable amount of prejudice (of both idiot and snob kind) and I just couldn't be bothered with it, so I reverted to a red duster. A couple of observations - first: does it make any difference to my levels of idiocy or snobbishness whichever ensign I fly? Nope. Second, isn't it a bit sad that a fairly small world like sailing has time for this level of petty conservatism where you have to conform to a certain standard or be ridiculed (and I thought golf was the passtime/sport played by bigots).

Maybe I should stick with the blue and stick two fingers up at everyone who makes snide comments, but life's too short and I've got sailing to get on with...

Re: Please Don\'t Hate Me,

I never wore anything else than courtesy flag.
I saw those posts you refer to (some agressive ones) but I don't know the signification for Red or Blue ensign and CA, could you help me ?
By The Way, may be I'll hoist a "forum burgee" I really enjoy to be a(mouse) part of it !

Alain, the CA is the Cruising Association, whose website is at

http://www.cruising.org.uk/

and whilst it is a general help organisation for cruising yachtsmen/women it does have the right to issue a warrant to fly a blue ensign.

British yacht ensigns are of several types. The normal ensign flown by everyone (and the correct one tomuse as a courtesy flag) is the red ensign (union flag in hoist, red fly). Some people, eg officers in the Forces, can fly a blue one, and members of some yacht clubs may fly either a "defaced" blue or a "defaced" red ensign - "defaced" means there is some symbol in the fly -if they apply for an Ensign Warrant from their Club Secretary.

The Royal Navy flies a white ensign with the cross of St George on it, as do members of the Royal Yacht Squadron (the poshest yacht club).

We British are not alone in this nonsense; the Belgians and the Americans, and doubtless some others, also go in for it, and I am told that the Finns take it to extremes!

Re: Change your flag change your life.

I can say that from observations in the Solent flags and stupidity don't seem linked.

Nor does nitwittery seem to be anything other than aberent. Most people are not stupid, ignorant, rude or careless all of the time.

My YM pass made no difference to me at all where as failing would have lead to me taking up knitting on dry land. No pressure there then.

We'd all get on better if we didn't take getting it wrong so seriously. When it's gone wrong it's a bit late to start shouting and getting all defensive.

I think we have to accept that most of us will never get enough time afloat to become truely great yotties and as a result whoops will happen. Also there are snobs everywhere for our entertainment.

The difference is you don't get other yotties laughing at you if you screw it up flying a red ensign...
