I think they are a no brainier for any coastal cruising. I know that if I become incapacitated in anyway, then my wife can just worst case activate the PLB.

J, definitely worth showing her where the Emergency button is on your DSC VHF as that will be the surest way of getting rapid assistance for Solent cruising.

She know's all that. But IMO a PLB is a great tool for instant notification of danger and positioning wherever you are, be it Solent or Mid Channel.

I have a PLB mainly because I go single handed a lot and also I enjoy fishing in the winter months and at night so if I do go in then I have small chance of making it. But in reality in the winter I probably won't but at least I hope they would find my body for the closure of the family. Also I was told that insurance won’t pay out for 7 years if no body is found but don’t quote me on this.

Wouldn’t a survival type suit be a sensible investment, as well as keeping you warm.
