Plastimo Performance fenders

I have just bought some of these and can't fathom how to blow the damn things up. I am supposed to inflate to a certain level, remove the pump and then turn the valve 3/4 turn to lock. Only problem is when I do this the bliddy thing partially deflates before I can lock the valve. Anyone know the technique required? Also, what is the best kind of pump to use? All comments gratefully received.
