I want to fit Plastimo davits to my LM27 to carry a Walker bay8,all up weight with tubes 45kg approx. Does anyone have any experience of these davits and has anyone fitted davits to a canoe stern ie Fisher,Colvic etc.?
Replies appreciated

I bought the larger diameter ones to fit to my cat, but my exerience of use is not really relevant because I then heavily modified them to become a permanent feature, with an additional supporting strut and a large solar panel on top. I also chopped most of the through deck part off.

SS is more prone to rust spots than my pullpit - ? quality of the SS. Seems strong enough for the task you have in mind, although I suspect that it is the through deck part that is always the weakness on these, and thus requires additional strengthening to the GRP and a reasonable weight distribution pad underneath.

I have a cat, so no experience of canoe sterns but I was strongly advised NOT to use Plastimo davits on the grounds that they were on the limits regarding weight to strength ratio and a rough sea might well tip the balance. Let me also say that I had little experience in this area and decide to follow the advise.

I looked at the advertised safe working load of 160 kgs
tender weight 32 kg
assume up to 20 gallons of water = additional 100 kgs (i.e. forgot to remove bung (again))

plus considerable additional load factor due to additional bracing, plus dinghy resting 50% on deck when hanging on the davits during transit.

I reckon I had significant safety factor.

I think that your 'additional bracings plus larger dia' answered the concerns pointed out to me; we went for a bespoke system which has proved its' worth on our voyages, and has even proved to be somewhat future proof, in that we dangle a rib with 9hp outboard attached now - and haven't sunk yet !

needed the larger size as a base for the solar panel frame (180watt panel)

It was cheaper to buy and modify, than for my local steel man to make from scratch.

Yes. Fitted the larger size to my Colvic Watson. The custom ss brackets required cost more than the davits, but I would have incurred this cost whatever davits I selected!

They hold my Quicksilver 270 airdeck with Tohatsu 8hp. They do flex a little and there's no easy way to "clamp" the dingy to them like there is on the likes of the Cooney Marine ones; but then they are just slightly more expensive.

As usual, you "pays your money and takes your choice".

Do you have any problems with her being a canoe stern? That is my main worry as i know the dinghy, although it won't spend a lot of time on them, will be resting against the stern, does this cause you any concern?
