I have just purchased a new Plastimo Cruiser liferaft in a valise, believe it or not the launch instructions are not totally clear. If I am unfortunate enough to have to use it, do I attach the line and throw the lot over, does the bag self open?

At what point do you decide to buy a liferaft? Distance cruising from shore? Valuable cargo e.g. kids? I've often thought about it, but with the tender strapped on the back, I've not gone ahead.

I've just bought a Zodiac one in a canister. Assuming its similar, Tie painter to strong point, chuck valise / canister into water, pull on painter line until about 8 mtrs of line have come out, give it a sharp tug and it will inflate.

The key issue is where you store it - the bottom of the lazerette with every spare rope and rag on board on top of it is bad news when the boat is sinking or burning under you.

Zodiac provide a good 15 minute video of how to inflate and just as importantly board the raft. If you PM me your address I'll be happy to post it to you on loan.

Cheers

The tender is better than nothing. But if you saw inflated liferafts at the show, they're a lot better than a dinghy, higher freeboard, covered and so on. If you go offshore in iffy weather, liferaft needed imho. There's a few who disagree, but their numbers seem to be dwindling for obvious reasons!
