I'm looking to specify\acquire some stormsails for a 34' monomaran which will almost certainly have need of 'em at some point - as planning on going NE instead of SW next spring.

Been looking at PVC-coated polyester fabric, of 900gm\sq.m. weight - as used in HGV side curtains ( which live at 60-70mph ), with the intent of heat-welding and sewing 2" terylene tape all round, and also radially from the clews to luffs.

One sailmaker indicates that this stuff stretches too much, but it seems bulletproof to us. It is substantially cheaper than sailmaker sailcloth, and comes in the high-visibility colour wanted........

We do need s/sails that can be relied on. Anyone out there with any experience of this stuff?

I wouldn't do it.

(i) The material almost certainly does have too much stretch - which means it wouldn't hold its shape in a blow; making it difficult to make progress to windward.

(ii) If the material were strong enough, are you confident in your ability to cut a sail that will set well?

(iii) Even if (i) and (ii) were okay - you will have no realistic way of testing the construction. The first time you use it in strong winds may be in a life-or-death situation - a bit embarassing if it fails then.

If you need to set a storm sail at all it will be likely to be in a situation where you need to make progress to windward in strong winds and seas. That is hard enough with the best equipment.

It is possible that you could make a satisfactory sail the way you suggest - although my limited knowledge suggests it is unlikely - but do you want to bet your life on it?

There is a valid case for questioning whether one needs storm sails at all - but if you are going to carry them you might as well make sure they can to the job if required.

Your sailmaker is right. It stretches. My winter cover is made of it and whilst it is excellent in that application I would not consider it for a sail. Look at a truck tilt which is strapped down and you can see the stretch.

Polyester sailcloth is the only way to go for storm canvas - remember the wind loadings per square foot are pretty high from F8 and up
