My local swindlery only sells Plastic Padding 'glassfibre resin' which seems intended for use with cars etc (judging by the picture on the tin!). I need a wee bit of resin for bedding in screws, sealing around holes etc in a plywood deck. Will this stuff be alright? It seems quite cheap.

Secondly, they also do a 'gel coat filler', presumably this is the stuff I need to repair shallow scratches and scrapes on my hull?

Ta!

Hi I would think both this products as described would be fine. If you are doing some work and refurbing I would thorughly recommend the West Epoxy course. They are based near Southamptom, i am not sure hwhere you are but for around £100.00 they did a day on use of resin, epoxy fillers and all sorts. great fun and lots of practical experieince plus discount on products at the end of day- Good luck

G'day Rob,

Standard resins will not stick long term to any timber, this is why boat builders now use foam ribs to provide the profile but put a lot more glass on to compensate for the missing timber. More expensive to build but will last.

You need an epoxy mixed with 'Micro-fibres' to seal the ply. We drill out the hole 10mm oversize and after curing drill a new hole the size of the screw shank.

This means the timber is covered by a 5mm protective layer of epoxy.

Hope this helps.

Avagoodweekend......

Thanks for the replies. Since I live on an island I am restricted in where I can buy things, and it seems that you cannot get epoxy sent by post.
Here's the stuff I can get locally:

By the way a mate of mine tried to use the PP 'marine filler' to repair scratches in his gelcoat and it all fell out! I think it must only be suitable for smaller, deeper, applications.

I have used PP Marine Filler to fix quite a big (50p) ding in my topsides, two years ago, it's been fine. No sign of cracking at all, and easy to use.
