Plastic glasses coming at Aldi

Maybe not a problem for typical UK imbibers but we have found the hard way that Ouzo turns clear plastic glasses cloudy. Our Greek friend drinks his from an aluminium cup.

I found gin and tonic did that as well.

Laphroaig: not a lot of people know that this whisky was the only one that could be legally sold in the US during the prohibition years. It was classed as a disinfectant, not a drink. I won a bottle last year and have not yet tried it. Now that I am curious ---- See you later. Maybe.

The point about plastic glasses taking on a taint from drinks like perno or gin is entirely accurate. I first came across this at uni. in the 70s when the students union changed to a "all plastic" policy following one glass breaking evening too many by the rugby club. Those of us who drank decent whisky then complained that our plastic "glasses" smelt of their previous aromatic contents (it isn't the alcohol that gets "stuck" in the plastic, it's various aromatic chemicals). Eventually a small stock of real glasses was reserved for those of us who drank good stuff.

On the boat, however, I use almost exclusively plastic, but I'm very careful to keep gin plastics separate from whisky plastics. I do have one proper nosing glass aboard, which I use for decent whisky in flat conditions.
