planning or displacement???

Hello, OAF, welcome to the forum. I've come a bit late to this post but I'd like to add my bit. By 'taking it further afield to warmer climes', I take it you mean you will be spending extended periods on the boat? If this is the case, then you will find a sportsboat like the S34 very cramped for living on board. I don't want to stir up the old sportscruiser v flybridge debate but a flybridge (or command bridge like Broom) offers a much larger internal volume. Then another factor is how you are going to get to your warmer climes. If you mean the Med, you can get there with an 11m boat going round the outside choosing the weather carefully for the longer legs. If you're thinking about going thru the French canals then a flybridge boat is out because it's too high for the bridges
As to which hull is better, planing or displacement or semi displacement, it's largely a matter of choice. No question that a modern planing hull is very seaworthy but they use a lot of fuel at speed, are not comfortable bashing into a head sea above, say, F4 and are not suited to running at displacement speeds. On the other hand, a full displacement hull may be economical but you have no option to go faster if you need to make port before nightfall or outrun the weather. On the face of it, a semi displacement hull offers the best of both worlds but a semi displacement hull definitely consumes more fuel at speed than a planing hull. So, if you think you're going to be whizzing about all the time at planing speeds, buy a planing hull but, if you think you might want to do some trips at displacement speed to save fuel, a semi displacement hull would be a good choice. A semi displacement hull tends to be more comfortable ploughing into a head sea as well although some can be a handful in a big following sea
With £80k and looking for a seaworthy 11m boat with good accomodation, you could look at a Broom 33, Aquastar 33 or Corvette 32 but these will be older than a S34. But there are dozens of different boats out there which could fit your bill so keep looking!
