Anyone got any experience of little Hardys and their planing capabilities.

The gearbox on my Hardy Navigator has given up the ghost and I am faced with some alternatives. (Mercury 90 hp 1994 vintage)

Find a s/h replacement bottom end,(probably cheapest option)
Repair the insides, (probably not cost effective)
Replace the engine complete. (Probably favourite)

My question is this.

I have read elsewhere that some have had problems getting the Hardy on to the plane with the normal 50 ish hp usually fitted to this boat. I have heard all about"DoelPhins" etc.
With the 90, it has always got on to the plane easily, even pulling a skier or two! (Kids! what can you do?)

Yes I know that the 90 is probably over the top for this boat but I have to say it performed very well and was fine for my purposes.

If I go for a good a secondhand two stroke 50 or 60 hp engine what will the performance be like?

(Trying to find canopy sticks suddenly seems not to matter so much!!)

The masters of small Hardys are the owners group on www.hardy-owner.org.uk/ This is the sort of Q they answer all the time

Very good advice!!

Been on the site and there are lots of questions about engine choice. The answer seems to be get a big engine! Navigators struggle to get on the plane with anything less that 70 hp.

I guess I am now looking for a suitable replacement engine. Two stroke minimum 80 hp!

thanks

Be careful over engineing any boat.
It will probably invalidate your insurance.

Sure, they'll take your money, but whether they will give any back in the event of a claim (any claim) is debatable.
